The Argentina Open will leave clay courts behind after 27 editions, shifting the ATP 250 tournament to hard courts starting in 2028. The surface change brings an end to a continuous era on the red dirt that began in 2001 and runs through 2027, reshaping the traditional South American tennis swing.
Journalist Sebastián Torok reported the upcoming scheduling overhaul, noting that tournament organizers plan an official announcement during the ATP Finals in Turin, which run from November 15 to November 22, though an announcement could arrive sooner. The tournament will remain at the ATP 250 level for now, with no immediate plans for a category upgrade to an ATP 500 event.
The decision in Buenos Aires has immediate implications for neighboring events on the South American circuit. The Chile Open is actively reviewing its own surface options for 2028, alongside potential alterations to the tournament calendar. Catalina Fillol, tournament director of the Chile Open, discussed regional trends during an interview with ADN TOP in September.
“Effectively, for 2028 there are going to be changes,” Fillol said. “The 2027 edition is played on clay in San Carlos de Apoquindo at the end of February, and the changes are going to occur already for what is 2028. There is a possibility of the surface change, just as there is also the possibility of some adjustments within the calendar. We have to be prepared for what is coming. We will do everything necessary so that the tournament stays in Chile.”
Despite impending infrastructure and surface shifts, tournament leadership in Santiago intends to preserve the collective identity of the regional swing. Fillol emphasized that events in Argentina, Chile, and Brazil should stay geographically close.
“We want to stay within what is the South American swing,” Fillol said. “We want to be close to the Rio tournament and be close to Buenos Aires. We believe that is the way to boost South American sport, which we have seen a tremendous advance within the tennis of the region. I think keeping ourselves united as a tour is the important thing and what, a little bit in this case, what Rio does, which is an ATP 500, is more or less where we are going to go ourselves.”
The definitive confirmation of the surface overhaul rests on the upcoming meetings and announcements scheduled around the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy. While initial reports place the formal unveiling between November 15 and November 22, stakeholders across the South American circuit continue preparations for the 2027 clay-court editions before the 2028 transition takes effect.
