Herve Renard could make two significant changes to his next Ivory Coast squad, with Yaya Fofana pressing for a first senior call-up and Oumar Diakite pushing to return to the Elephants.
Fofana has been one of the outstanding performers in Ligue 2 with Stade de Reims, while Diakite’s recent scoring run at Sturm Graz has strengthened his case after he was left out of the previous international gathering.
The 22-year-old midfielder has scored eight goals and provided two assists in 10 league appearances this season, putting him at the top of the Ligue 2 goalscoring charts.
His performances earned him the division’s player of the month award for September, and he has maintained that level in October by scoring twice in three matches. His forward movement, eye for goal and ability to influence matches have made him one of the league’s most notable discoveries.
Fofana was called up to the Ivory Coast under-23 squad in June 2024 but did not play. He could now move into senior contention, although Mali are also monitoring the midfielder, who was developed at the AFE academy.
The Ivory Coast coaching staff have taken notice of his progress. A member of the Elephants’ technical team told Ivoirezine that Fofana had already been considered for the previous squad.
His inclusion in the next list has not been officially confirmed, but his performances have increased the likelihood of a first senior selection. For Renard, Fofana would offer energy in midfield, confidence in front of goal and an additional threat in the final third.
Diakite, meanwhile, appears to have responded strongly to being omitted from the last gathering. The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations winner has reportedly been pre-selected and could be included in the next Ivory Coast squad.
The Stade de Reims forward is currently on loan at Sturm Graz and has scored five goals in three league matches since the start of October. Used in a central striking role, the former winger has found a position that allows his finishing ability to have a greater impact.
Having come through the ASEC Mimosas academy, Diakite has given Renard a clear reminder of his qualities. With competition for places in attack still open, his recent efficiency strengthens his case.
Diakite’s form also offers an opportunity to change the perception created by the criticism he received from Ivory Coast supporters after the World Cup. The difficulties experienced by Ange-Yoan Bonny and Elye Wahi could further alter the attacking pecking order.
If he maintains his effectiveness as a centre-forward, Diakite may be able to earn greater responsibility with the orange, white and green shirt. A recall would represent more than recognition for his current form: it would give him the chance to rebuild his position in a fiercely contested attack.
For Renard, Fofana’s emergence and Diakite’s resurgence present two different selection decisions. One is seeking his first senior opportunity; the other is attempting to reclaim his place.
