SCOTTLAND FC recorded a 2-0 home win against Petro de Luanda of Angola at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday, to give themselves an advantage in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions’ League second-round preliminary stage.
Popularly known as “Mabviravira”, the Mabvuku-based side’s triumph will see them travelling to Angola this Friday for the second leg in a comfortable zone.
Petro de Luanda were down to 10 men 30 seconds into the match after their goalkeeper Hugo Marques fouled Scottland FC’s Panashe Mutimbanyoka at the edge of the box. Hence, he was given a straight red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
Despite their opponents reduced in number, Scottland FC struggled to find the back of the net, as the match went into halftime goalless.
Mabviravira then opened the scoring in the 66th minute through Khama Billiat, before Knowledge Musona doubled the lead in the 80th minute to make it 2-0.
Sunday’s result was welcomed by Scottland FC coach Norman Mapeza, who is hoping for another positive result in the second leg.
“It was difficult to play 10 men, but I am happy to have scored these two goals.
“Now this gives us an advantage going into the second leg, and we hope to also go there and pull a positive result,” he said.
Scottland FC will be avoiding a three-goal margin defeat in Angola for them to win the fixture.
If they knock out Petro de Luanda, Scottland FC will qualify for the CAF Champions’ League group stages, becoming the first team after FC Platinum in 2020 to achieve that feat.
