McCarthy’s Champions League goal adds to exclusive list

Aden McCarthy joined an elite list of South Africans who have scored in the UEFA Champions League when he netted the only goal for Azerbaijan’s Sabah in their group game against German giants Borussia Dortmund in Baku on Tuesday.

McCarthy headed home on the stroke of halftime to equalise for the home side but they ended up losing 2-1.

Sibusiso Zuma (5): The fan favourite at Danish club FC Copenhagen got all his Champions League goals in the qualifying rounds, first in 2001 against Torpedo Kutaisi of Georgia and Serie A giants Lazio, then twice two years later against Sliema Wanderers of Malta.

Quinton Fortune (2): Scored twice in the 2003/04 campaign for Manchester United, first in their opening group game against Panathinaikos at Old Trafford in September 2003 and then in the same match as Benni McCarthy when they lost in Porto 2-1 in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie.

Jacob Lekgetho (2): The defender, who passed away aged 34, netted goals for Lokomotiv Moscow in the qualifying round against FC Tirol Innsbruck in 2001 and the next year against another Austrian club Grazer AK.

Nasief Morris (2): The centre back found the net for his Greek club Panathinaikos in August 2005 to beat Wisla Krakow of Poland and advance to the group phase, where he also scored the consolation goal in a 5-1 drubbing at Werder Bremen in December of the same year.

Steven Pienaar (2): Scored for Ajax Amsterdam away against Olympique Lyonnaise in France in a 2-0 win in October 2002 and again the next season at San Siro against Ac Milan, as the Dutch club lost 3-2 and exited at the quarterfinal stage.

Tsepo Masilela (1): The left back got his only Champions League goal for his Israeli club Maccabi Haifa in a qualifying round tie in 2009 as they thrashed Glentoran of Northern Ireland 10-0 on aggregate.

Bennett Mnguni (1): The defensive midfielder struck a cracker for Lokomotiv Moscow as they surprised Real Madrid and forced a 2-2 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu in a group match in December 2002.
