African stars shine across Europe as Sinayoko, Maza and Diomande lead weekend’s top five

Lassine Sinayoko’s decisive display for Paris FC, Ibrahim Maza’s leading role in Bayer Leverkusen’s win and Yan Diomande’s impact for Real Madrid were among the standout performances by African players in Europe’s five major leagues this weekend.

From Ligue 1 to the Premier League, five players made a significant contribution to their teams’ results.

1. Lassine Sinayoko

Lassine Sinayoko played a part in all four of Paris FC’s goals as they edged Rennes 4-3 in a thrilling Ligue 1 encounter at Jean-Bouin on Sunday.

The Mali international set up Maxime Lopez twice before half-time, then restored Paris FC’s lead in the 76th minute with an acrobatic overhead kick.

Rennes levelled at 3-3 through Esteban Lepaul’s third penalty of the match, but Sinayoko won another spot-kick after being fouled by Rongier and converted it himself in the 97th minute.

The 26-year-old was named player of the match and now has six league goals this season. Paris FC moved up to fourth place.

2. Ibrahim Maza

Ibrahim Maza was involved in both goals as Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to beat Freiburg 2-1 in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

After Derry Scherhant put Freiburg ahead in the 14th minute, the 20-year-old Algeria international equalised five minutes later. He then supplied the assist for Patrik Schick’s winning goal in the 76th minute.

Maza was named the match’s most valuable player and has two goals and two assists in the Bundesliga this season. Bayer Leverkusen are fourth, one point behind the leaders.

3. Yan Diomande

Starting in place of the suspended Vinicius, Yan Diomande contributed to three of Real Madrid’s four goals in their 4-1 victory over Sevilla in La Liga.

The 19-year-old Ivorian winger set up Arda Guler for the opening goal in the 30th minute. He also played a role in the move that led to the penalty converted by Kylian Mbappe.

After Sevilla had reduced the deficit, Diomande restored Real Madrid’s three-goal advantage in the 82nd minute with a strike from outside the penalty area.

He became the youngest Real Madrid player since the start of the century to score and provide an assist in the same La Liga match. Diomande has two league goals this season, while Real Madrid have 21 points and remain just outside the top three.

4. Akor Adams

Akor Adams scored the only goal as Venezia claimed their first Serie A victory of the season against Napoli on Saturday.

The Nigeria striker reacted quickest to a long throw from Simon Sohm, moving ahead of Amir Rrahmani before beating Alex Meret with his right foot in the 49th minute.

Adams had already forced Meret into a save before the interval with Venezia’s only shot on target. His second league goal ended a run of several weeks without scoring, although Venezia remain bottom after losing their opening six matches and have three points.

5. Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi earned Fulham their first Premier League win of the season with the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Hull on Saturday.

The Nigeria international struck in the 33rd minute, beating Konstantinos Tzolakis with a low deflected effort for his first goal of the campaign.

Iwobi also saw a cross for Gonzalo Garcia hit the crossbar. The goal took his Premier League total to 36, while Fulham climbed out of the relegation zone into 17th place on five points.
