Alessia Russo felt a point was the least we deserved in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at home to Aston Villa in the Women’s Super League.
The visitors opened the scoring against the run of play in the 25th minute by way of Chasity Grant, but we eventually got our equaliser with five minutes left on the clock when Russo headed in from a Stina Blackstenius delivery.
Reflecting on the result, Russo said: “I think we should have been more ruthless throughout the game that we could have won here today. We've been on a good run and we want to continue that. But yes, this league's tough. Home and away, you've got to be at 100% and we were there in moments, but not for all of the game today.”
Asked how the players pick themselves up when we’re creating so many chances, only to concede the opener, Alessia continued: “It’s difficult. The goal doesn't help. But yes, like I said, these teams, even teams that you don't consider to be the top four, they have so much quality.
“Aston Villa are a really hard team, but we've got to be better. We had spells, we had moments, we created. But yes, we've got to put the ball in the back of the net.”
The energy inside Emirates Stadium was tangible was Russo had buried the equaliser, with supporters off their seats and urging us on to a late winner.
“It felt great,” Russo said. “It definitely spurred us on. I think, yes, it's a shame there was so little time left. But no, they're great. They show up every week and yes, we needed them.”
Some supporters will be getting up in the early hours of next Sunday to make the long trip up to Mersyside for our 12pm kick-off against Liverpool at Anfield, so Russo is keen to get back to winning ways for our Gooners.
“That fixture's early and we know the dedication that they put in,” she added. “So yes, it's about us now. We need to perform for them, for ourselves, for everyone around Arsenal. And yes, we've had some good moments this season and some challenging ones, but now it's about how we react.”
