A role model for generations
Diego Simeone struck a notable note of respect ahead of one of the Champions League's fiercest fixtures. The Atletico Madrid boss hailed Harry Kane as a deserving Ballon d'Or winner on the eve of a decisive clash that pits his in-form side against Bayern Munich.
Atletico host the Bavarian giants tomorrow, Tuesday, at the Wanda Metropolitano, with their nine-game unbeaten run on the line. The Madrid side arrive in high spirits, having won eight of their last nine across all competitions. That includes a precious 2-1 win over rivals Real Madrid in the capital derby.
Kane a role model for the generations
Simeone saluted Kane's exceptional goalscoring instinct ahead of the eagerly awaited clash. The Argentine said at the pre-match press conference: "First of all, I would like to congratulate him on his deserved winning of the Ballon d'Or, it is incredible, I have always admired him, with his maturity over the years, he has regained his best levels without losing his goalscoring sense, he knows exactly what the team needs."
Kane's impact goes beyond the goals, the Argentine added: "His talent is a real gain for the game and for the young players who take him as a role model, because he leaves a legacy that shows great achievements can be made through hard work."
A battle of closely matched positions
Sixteenth in the Champions League standings, Atletico have four points from three matches. That leaves them just one point behind fourteenth-placed Bayern Munich, who have drawn their last two in the competition. Tuesday's clash is decisive for both sides in the battle for qualification.
Simeone closed by stressing how hard it is to stay consistent. "Finding balance and consistency is the hardest part, and it is what we all strive for as coaches, we have to enjoy the journey and go through it with enthusiasm as we move forward," he said.
