Football fans hail Flamingos’ World Cup semi-final qualification

Some football fans in Lagos on Monday expressed excitement over Nigeria’s Flamingos’ qualification for the semifinals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

It was reported that the Flamingos defeated Venezuela 1-0 to advance to the semi-finals of the competition.

Nigeria will face Brazil on Wednesday for a place in the final of the tournament.

The fans, who spoke with NAN, said the team had lived up to expectations in spite of losing their opening group-stage match to Poland.

Charles Adegbenle, a grassroots women’s football coach, said he was excited about the team’s performances so far in the competition.

He said the players had demonstrated maturity and the ability to remain composed under pressure.

“They are a good team, and I am impressed with their performances so far. However, they still need to work harder as they prepare to face Brazil in the semi-finals.

“They have shown that they are not intimidated by big names or strong opponents. I sincerely wish them the best of luck in their semi-final match,” Adegbenle said.

Clement Nnaji, a football fan, said the team was in good shape and had performed well to reach the semi-finals.

He added that the players had demonstrated determination and the quality needed to compete for the title.

According to Nnaji, the team must remain cautious when facing Brazil.

“I am very confident in the team’s performance so far. They have really proved themselves, and I can only wish them the best of luck against Brazil,” Nnaji said.

Wilson Tochukwu, another grassroots football coach, said the Flamingos had performed well and had what it take  to reach the final.

He advised the players to strengthen their defence, particularly against tougher opposition.

“They are a great team, and reaching the semi-finals means they deserve respect. They have really made us proud.

“Not much was expected of them after they lost their opening group match, but look at what they have achieved since then. They are truly an incredible team.

“We wish them the best and hope they go further to reach the final,” Tochukwu said.

Nigeria must defeat Brazil, who beat China 2-1, to secure a place in the final of the competition.

The Flamingos’ best previous performance at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup was a third-place finish in 2022 in India.

They reached the semifinals for the first time that year after defeating the U.S. on penalties before winning the bronze medal.

Their qualification for the semifinals in the 2026 edition offers Nigeria an opportunity to surpass that achievement by reaching the final for the first time.
