Palmer to miss Liverpool clash as FA suspension stands despite online rumours
Palmer to miss Liverpool clash as FA suspension stands despite online rumours

Chelsea talisman Cole Palmer will serve his one-match domestic suspension this Wednesday against Liverpool, despite viral social media reports falsely claiming the Football Association (FA) had suspended the ban following an appeal.

Rumours began circulating heavily across online fan networks on Tuesday suggesting that Chelsea had successfully appealed the playmaker’s red card from Saturday’s London derby.

The unverified reports claimed the FA granted a conditional reprieve based on the player’s previously clean disciplinary record.

However, regulatory guidelines and credible football authorities confirm that no such reversal has occurred.

According to established FA rules, a red card resulting from two bookable offences carries an automatic, non-appealable one-match ban under normal operational procedures.

The disciplinary reality

Palmer was dismissed by referee Chris Kavanagh in the 80th minute of Chelsea’s 2-0 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, October 24.

The 24-year-old picked up a rapid succession of second-half yellow cards: the first following an off-the-ball altercation with Spurs’ Mateus Fernandes, and the second just nine minutes later for an ill-timed challenge on former teammate Conor Gallagher.

Reflecting on the dismissal, Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso stood by his player while acknowledging the error.

Speaking to reporters, Alonso backed a “mature” Cole Palmer to learn from the “mistakes that led to the England forward’s red card.”

Former PGMOL chief and FIFA referee Keith Hackett heavily criticized the lenient nature of standard disciplinary procedures regarding the incident, telling Football Insider:
“I’m of the opinion that a one-game ban, which is laid down by the Football Association, is insufficient. It gives him a week’s rest.”

Domestic crossover explained

Confusion among supporters regarding Palmer’s status was further compounded by his confirmed availability for Chelsea’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Manchester United on October 31.

As verified by BBC Sport, red card suspensions in English football strictly transfer across all domestic competitions.

Because Chelsea’s immediate next fixture is their EFL Cup (Carabao Cup) fourth-round tie at Anfield on Wednesday night, Palmer will serve his mandatory one-match ban during that cup match.

The suspension will be fully cleared on Wednesday night, leaving Palmer completely eligible to return to Premier League action at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
