Trey Nyoni admitted that playing so many matches is a new experience for him at any level — let alone a senior one for Liverpool — but the 19-year-old is thriving.
In the summer, Liverpool turned down a $40 million (£30 million) offer from Nottingham Forest for Nyoni, with a clear pathway to minutes made clear to him under Andoni Iraola, especially after the departure of Curtis Jones.
This week, he has started two games on the spin against Arsenal and then Fenerbahce, with a new contract said to be in the pipeline to reward his progress and reflect his newfound status within the team.
"It is new to me, playing this many games — I didn't even do that in the academy," Nyoni told reporters, including from the Liverpool ECHO, ahead of this weekend's clash with Crystal Palace.
"Slowly and steadily, I am adjusting to the pace and tempo of the game. You have to learn quick. There's a lot I have to learn, but I am enjoying it."
Iraola arrived at Liverpool from Bournemouth in the summer with a reputation for trusting and developing young talents. Alongside Rio Ngumoha, Nyoni has looked to take the next steps.
"The faith in youth the manager has and the players around me have in me helps me settle a lot more," Nyoni outlined.
"There are lots of senior players around me who help me a lot. I just want to stay as I am. I never get nervous. Every time you pull on a Liverpool shirt, there are always high standards.
"We [Nyoni, Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas] are always pushing each other. Obviously, we are young and doing well but, ultimately, our aim is to help the team try to win games and set an example for the next guys coming through the academy.
"To get where I want to get to, I have to be able to compete against the best players in the world. The last week has been a really good learning experience but I just have to keep going."
Get Liverpool's new 2026/27 home kit
Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.
Nyoni has been called up to the England U21s set-up for the first time ahead of the November international break.
The teenager insisted that his contract is being handled by his representatives, adding: "My main focus right now is playing football and performing every time I go on the pitch."
Liverpool.com says: If Nyoni does agree a new deal, which seems to be the direction of travel, then it will be fully deserved. He is now a proper part of the roster.
So far this season, he has been one of the biggest climbers in terms of his position in the Liverpool squad. Starting as a fringe player, it would now be a surprise if he was left out of the starting XI at Selhurst Park.
