BREAKING: Cristiano Ronaldo Retires From International Football After 23 Years
Cristiano Ronaldo

Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his 23-year career with the Portugal national team.

The 41-year-old confirmed his decision on Thursday, November 5, 2026, in a social media announcement, saying it was time to hand back the iconic number seven shirt he had worn for more than two decades.

According to Sky Sports and Reuters, Ronaldo will bring his international career to a close after Portugal’s November international break.

In his farewell message, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner described the decision as emotional and difficult, thanking his teammates, coaches, family and supporters who accompanied him throughout his journey.

“Portugal will always be in me,” Ronaldo said, reflecting on his years representing his country.

Ronaldo retires as the highest goalscorer in men’s international football history, with 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal. He made his senior international debut in 2003 at the age of 18.

During his time with the national team, he captained Portugal to its first major international trophy at the 2016 European Championship (Euro 2016). He also helped the country win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

His retirement marks the end of an era for Portuguese football, with the Al-Nassr forward leaving behind records for both international appearances and goals in men’s football.

Ronaldo’s announcement comes after a turbulent period involving a reported disagreement with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus during the previous international break.

However, his retirement from international football does not mean an immediate end to his professional playing career, as he remains an Al-Nassr player.
