2026/27 English Premier League Gameweek 8, Chelsea vs Tottenham

Chelsea have reached an unwanted Premier League milestone after Cole Palmer received the first red card of his senior career during a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The England international was sent off for two bookable offences in a heated London derby.

Chelsea became only the third club in Premier League history to accumulate 100 red cards , excluding subsequently rescinded dismissals.

The Blues' latest disciplinary setback came as Tottenham secured all three points through a Mike Penders own goal and a second goal from Mathys Tel, leaving Chelsea facing fresh questions about their discipline.

Palmer's dismissal took Chelsea into the Premier League's century club for red cards, joining Everton and Arsenal, who have recorded 113 and 110 dismissals respectively.

The defeat also dealt a blow to Chelsea's league campaign, with the club sitting fifth, following other teams' victory in their matches on Sunday.

Palmer Sees Red for First Time in Senior Career

Cole Palmer got his record dismissal during a tense second half at Stamford Bridge, with the Chelsea forward receiving two yellow cards within 10 minutes.

The first booking arrived in the 70th minute after Tottenham midfielder Mateus Fernandes handled the ball while on the ground.

Palmer reacted by forcefully pushing his midriff into the Portuguese midfielder's face while Fernandes was lying prone, prompting referee Chris Kavanagh to show him a yellow card.

The situation worsened for the England international 10 minutes later.

With Tottenham already leading following Penders' own goal, Palmer arrived late to a challenge and landed his foot on the leg of former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

Kavanagh showed Palmer a second yellow card, resulting in the forward's first dismissal at senior level.

The sending-off compounded Chelsea's problems as they attempted to recover from their deficit against their London rivals.

Chelsea Join Everton and Arsenal in Unwanted Record

Palmer's red card adds another incident to Chelsea's growing disciplinary concerns, particularly as the club continue to compete for important league positions and domestic honours.

whose disciplinary record has come under scrutiny following another red card.

Excluding rescinded dismissals, Chelsea have now accumulated 100 red cards in Premier League history, becoming the third team to reach the unwanted milestone.

Everton lead the standings with 113 dismissals, followed by Arsenal with 110, while Chelsea have now joined the two clubs in the century club.

The latest incident has questioned Chelsea's disciplinary record, requesting the Blues' ability to maintain discipline during high-pressure matches.

Chelsea's disciplinary problems were already a talking point last season, when their players and staff were sent off 11 times during the 2025-26 campaign.

That was the highest total among Premier League teams, with Tottenham recording the next-highest figure of five dismissals.

Palmer to Miss Liverpool Clash but Could Face Manchester United

After being sent off against Tottenham, Palmer is expected to remain available for Chelsea's Premier League home fixture against Manchester United next weekend, provided his suspension is not extended.

However, the automatic one-match suspension will instead rule him out of Chelsea's Carabao Cup trip to Liverpool on Wednesday.

His absence will be a setback for the Blues as they look to respond to their defeat against Spurs and maintain their position among the Premier League's leading teams.

Any extension to the suspension would create further uncertainty over Palmer's availability, although the immediate consequence is his absence from the midweek cup fixture.

Rogers Escapes Red Card as Tempers Flare

Palmer was not the only player involved in a contentious disciplinary incident during the derby.

Chelsea's Morgan Rogers was perhaps fortunate to avoid a red card after a late challenge on Gallagher during stoppage time.

Rogers cynically flung a leg into Gallagher inside Chelsea's half, but the referee opted to show him a yellow card rather than dismiss him.

The incident added to the frustration at Stamford Bridge as the match became increasingly heated in its closing stages.

While Palmer's sending-off left Chelsea with another disciplinary problem to address, Rogers' escape from a possible dismissal also raised questions about the challenges made during the encounter.

Chelsea Stumble as Tottenham Climb the Table

The 2-0 defeat leaves Chelsea fifth in the Premier League standings, although their position could change depending on Sunday's results.

Tottenham, meanwhile, move up to 12th after claiming a valuable away win against their London rivals.

The defeat represents more than a missed opportunity to collect points for Chelsea.

Palmer's first senior red card and the club's 100th Premier League dismissal have placed their discipline firmly back in the spotlight.

With a Carabao Cup trip to Liverpool coming up before the next league fixture against Manchester United, Chelsea must quickly regroup and avoid allowing their disciplinary problems to undermine their campaign further.
