Renee Slegers said Alessia Russo was an "amazing role model" after the England striker netted a historic hat-trick in our 3-0 win over Benfica.

The treble saw our no.23 become the leading English goalscorer in the Champions League with 23 goals, capping off a fantastic team performance.

"Really happy with the clean sheet, happy with the three goals going forward," Renee said on the performance, "chance creation was really high today, very disciplined, defending from the whole team start to finish.

"[We had] new partnerships on the pitch, two players making their debuts, there were a lot of positives today, Alessia's hat-trick, captaining the team, role-modelling the team throughout the game, always on and off the pitch.

"Caitlin Foord made her 50th appearance for Arsenal in the Champions League, so there were a lot of positives. This was us, we said we wanted to back up the performance and the result against Tottenham in the north London derby, and we did that, so I'm just really pleased with the performance and happy for the players."

While it was a night to be proud of for all of our Gunners, Alessia stole the headlines with a hat-trick to secure a special record.

To add to an already fantastic night, our no.23 secured the record while wearing the captain's armband, in what Renee felt was as close to a perfect night a player can have.

"I think so for Alessia, absolutely. As I said, she was captaining the team, she's an amazing role model, she's a fantastic human being, cares for everything and everyone. It was an amazing night for her and I'm really pleased.

"She got the three goals, she's such a good player. She works her heart out of possession, she's a team player and she has the quality going forward to decide the game for us. A great night for Alessia and a fantastic record."

Alessia's wasn't the only record to tumble on the night, as we celebrated 200 goals under Renee with our third of the night.

In just over two years in charge, our head coach has overseen Champions League and Champions Cup glory, and hopes our back-to-back wins over Tottenham and Benfica will propel us towards more silverware this season.

"That's a lot of goals, 200! That's great, of course. But just like that one, we want to back it up and want to go for more.

"I think these were two really good performances, five goals scored in two games, we want to score more goals."
