Iraola delighted with Liverpool youngster’s development after starring in comeback win

Andoni Iraola praised Rio Ngumoha’s growing influence after the 18-year-old impressed in Liverpool’s win over Villarreal.

The winger set up Liverpool’s second and third goals on the night as they came from 2-0 down to win 4-3 at Anfield.

“I think he was coming from a very good second half against Brentford,” Iraola said.

“Today he didn’t have an easy game because they were demanding him defensively but offensively he’s very difficult to stop.

“If we can put him in situations one v one where he can get into the box, normally he makes plays, he produces things.

“The assist for Alexis is lovely play. He can even go down for a penalty but decides to continue and makes a great decision.”

The Liverpool boss also highlighted Ngumoha’s improving fitness and willingness to learn.

“Endurance wise, he’s been able to play more minutes,” Iraola said.

“We were pushing him a little bit, he was tired but he’s done a good effort and really happy for him.

“I’m happy with his attitude because he wants to improve the things we think he needs to improve.”

Ngumoha has also been asked to operate from different positions, something Iraola believes is helping to develop his game further.

“He’s eager to add more things to his game, has changed sides a lot,” he said.

“He’s played on the right a lot recently and is feeling so comfortable now, adding some shots with the left foot.

“If he can add these small things to his game it will put him in an even better position and that’s the good thing with Rio.”

But Iraola also urged patience with the teenager.

“He’s still 18, he can still add things and I hope he continues in the same way.

“It’s not always going to be like this, he will have ups and downs in the process.”
