Gareth Taylor column | Why anger is good, changes for cup tie and home double-header
Gareth Taylor column - 20/10/2026

It was so frustrating to get nothing out of last Sunday’s match at Aston Villa, because we dominated the game for large parts of it.

We scored a wonder goal from Nati [Natalia Ramos] that was really well taken and we should have got way more goals in terms of outcomes from our play.

We had a lot of attempts on goal, way more than Aston Villa, but 1-0 is always a precarious scoreline so we’ve got to be better at the top end of the pitch, no doubt about that.

Our decision-making in the final third needs to improve and that’s not something I’ve not said before, as it’s always going to be the difference for us.

We need to make the most from all of the ball that we have, and we didn’t work their goalkeeper enough, even though she did make eight saves. It was very comfortable for her and we have to do better.

Yes, we are missing a lot of players in the forward areas, but still I expect us to be better with the players that we have.

Their equaliser just comes from a long ball. Chasity Grant is fast, we were back into position and kept her wide and she probably put the ball in the only place it could go, so that was frustrating and it got their tails up a little bit.

I then felt we needed to control the play better than what we did when we conceded the corner for the second goal. We gave them far too many corners in a game that we totally dominated, and that needs to improve.

It was good to get Vivien Endemann back. I wanted to start her in the game but was told it was a real risk so she was on restricted minutes, and that is the same with Mao Itamura after her return.

The players were angry after the game and angry is good. I was as well because it is a game we shouldn’t lose. The minimum is to take a point but that’s what football does to you when you don’t take your moments.

We have two home games this week, starting with Manchester United in the Subway Players Cup tonight at St Helens Stadium.

We need to manage the players’ load so there will be some changes. I see it as not to make wholesale changes because we want to restore some rhythm back. We are also not in a position to make wholesale changes either with the players not available.

Then on Sunday we face London City Lionesses. They have made the start I expected them to make given the quality of the players they have.

It’s a tough challenge but as always we go into each game with a plan and we will try to execute it, giving ourselves the best possible chance of winning.

Thanks as always for your support
