Uganda’s $129m Akii-Bua Stadium Nears Completion Ahead of AFCON 2027

Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations are gathering pace, with construction of the $129 million Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City reportedly reaching 80 per cent completion, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The 20,000-capacity facility in northern Uganda is among the major infrastructure projects being developed as the East African country prepares to co-host the continental tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

The stadium is being equipped with modern sporting facilities, including a hybrid grass playing surface and a multi-pitch training complex intended to support participating teams during the competition.

Once completed, the venue is expected to expand Uganda’s capacity to host international football matches while providing improved facilities for players, officials and supporters.

The project also forms part of the country’s wider investment in sports infrastructure ahead of AFCON 2027, as the three co-host nations work towards meeting the requirements of a major continental tournament.

For Uganda, the completion of the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium would represent a significant addition to its sporting facilities and provide a potential venue for future international competitions beyond the Africa Cup of Nations.

With preparations continuing across the host countries, attention will remain on the timely delivery of stadiums, training facilities and other infrastructure required to stage the tournament successfully.
