Manchester United’s early-season struggles echo troubled 1986 campaign

Manchester United have matched their worst start to a season since 1986 after recording only one Premier League victory.

That sole success came on 30 August, when United beat Ipswich Town 5-2. The result leaves the club level with the unwanted record set 39 years ago.

In 1986, Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson was dismissed in November after securing just one league win. He was replaced by Alex Ferguson, who had previously guided Aberdeen to major success and ended the dominance of Celtic and Rangers.

The rest of Ferguson’s career became part of football history, including his later appointment as a knight and the title “Sir”.

Manchester United’s next match will be against Bournemouth.
