The Confederation of African Football has appointed Nigerian Samson Adamu as its new General Secretary. CAF made the announcement on Sunday through its website following a rigorous recruitment drive that drew multiple applicants.

Adamu, who has been acting in the role since March, takes over after Veron Mosengo-Omba stepped down to become president of the Democratic Republic of Congo's football federation. He emerged victorious from a competitive selection process that saw the position widely promoted and numerous candidates interviewed.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe praised Adamu's track record in African football administration. "He brings extensive experience, having joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before moving to Director of Tournaments and Events," Motsepe said in the statement.

During his eight years with CAF, Adamu has overseen delivery of major continental tournaments, including the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations. His responsibilities now extend to managing CAF's day-to-day operations and driving the organisation's strategic goals.

A FIFA Master graduate in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, Adamu brings both formal credentials and deep institutional knowledge to the position. He's the son of Amos Adamu, a former Sports Ministry director and ex-FIFA Executive Committee member.

His appointment slots him into a storied lineage of CAF General Secretaries. Egypt's Mourad Fahmy held the post from 1961 to 1982, succeeded by his son Mustapha Fahmy, who served until 2010, followed by grandson Amr Fahmy from 2017 to 2019.
