MC Alger Draws on Historic Comebacks Tagged ‘Remontada’ to Inspire Rangers Fightback

Mouloudia Club d’Alger (MC Alger) will draw inspiration from some of the most memorable comebacks in its continental history as it attempts to overturn a two-goal deficit against Nigeria’s Enugu Rangers in Friday’s CAF Champions League return leg.

The Algerian giants host Rangers at the Ali Ammar Stadium in Douéra, hoping to recover from their 2-0 first-leg defeat at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta and keep alive their ambition of reaching the group stage.

According to Algerian newspaper El Khabar, MCA are looking to their rich continental history for the psychological boost needed to rally the players and supporters ahead of the decisive encounter.

The club’s history offers several examples of overcoming seemingly insurmountable deficits, including a famous victory over Rangers themselves in the 1976 African Cup of Champions Clubs semi-finals.

In that encounter, MCA lost the first leg 2-0 in Nigeria but overturned the deficit with a 3-0 victory at the Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers on November 12, 1976. Goals from Belmou, Zenir and Bousri secured their passage to the final.

MCA went on to face Guinea’s Hafia Conakry in the final. After losing the first leg 3-0 in Conakry, they matched that scoreline in the return leg through a goal by Bachi and two from Batrouni before winning the penalty shoot-out 4-1 to claim the club’s first African title.

That historic campaign remains a powerful reminder of the possibility of turning a two-goal deficit around against the same Nigerian opposition.

Other comebacks offer further inspiration

MCA also produced a dramatic turnaround against Ivorian side Stella Abidjan in the 1980 African Cup of Champions Clubs. After losing the first leg 4-2 in Abidjan, the Algerians won the return match 3-1, with Lakhdar Belloumi scoring twice, including a decisive late goal, to secure qualification under the away-goals rule then in force.

Their 2007 CAF Confederation Cup encounter with Nigeria’s Kwara United offered another example of their capacity to fight back. Having lost the first leg 3-0 in Nigeria, MCA won the return fixture by the same scoreline at Ben Haddad Stadium on March 18, 2007.

However, their revival ended in disappointment as Kwara United prevailed in the penalty shoot-out after Haj Bougach missed his attempt.

In 2011, MCA again recovered from a heavy first-leg defeat, this time against Zimbabwe’s Dynamos. Following a 4-1 loss away from home, they secured a 3-0 victory at Omar Hamadi Stadium in Algiers on April 3, with Ibrahim Badbouda among the standout performers, to progress to the next round.

The most emphatic example came in the 2018 CAF Champions League, when MCA responded to a 2-0 first-leg defeat against Congolese side Otoho with a remarkable 9-0 demolition at the Stade du 5 Juillet on February 18. Hicham Nekkach scored four goals as the Algerians recorded one of the biggest victories in their continental history.

Rangers stand between MCA and another revival

Those precedents will provide encouragement, but MCA must now translate their historical achievements into a convincing performance against a Rangers side that carries a two-goal advantage into Friday’s return leg.

The Algerians need to win by at least three goals to secure qualification within regulation time. A two-goal victory would level the aggregate score and take the tie to a penalty shoot-out.

For MCA, the challenge is not merely to revisit past glories but to reproduce the urgency, attacking precision and defensive discipline that made those comebacks possible.

Rangers, meanwhile, will be determined to protect their advantage and prevent the hosts from turning another chapter of MCA’s continental history into a revival story.
