Why United Are Eyeing Toney
Manchester United are reportedly keen to beat Tottenham Hotspur to the signing of Al-Ahli forward Ivan Toney, according to Caught Offside. Concerns over Benjamin Sesko’s fitness have prompted the club to prioritise a new striker in January, with a loan or experienced, lower-cost option preferred over a pricey young No.9.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was an early target, but Leeds United are close to tying him down to a new deal, so Michael Carrick’s side have cooled their interest.
Toney’s Impressive Numbers
The 30-year-old netted 21 goals and provided five assists in 35 Premier League outings for Brentford in 2022/23. Since joining the Saudi Pro League in 2024, he has hit 30 goals and five assists in his first campaign, followed by 40 goals and 11 assists last season. He has also lifted two AFC Champions League Elite trophies and a Saudi Super Cup.
This term he already has 13 goals and two assists in 14 appearances.
Competition and Alternatives
Toney is reportedly open to a Premier League return, though he is settled in the Middle East. Everton, Newcastle United and Tottenham are also in the mix, so United have lined up Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ollie Watkins as back-up options.
Spurs signed Omar Marmoush in the summer, but the Egyptian prefers a withdrawn role rather than leading the line.
Our Take
Toney’s Premier League pedigree and age make him a sensible short-term fix for either club. With a proven record in England and no need for a lengthy settling-in period, a January or summer deal could suit United or Spurs well, though the competition may push the price up.
