According to a report by FootballTransfers on Monday, November 2, 2026, Manchester United have been keeping a close eye on Fulham defender Calvin Bassey for some time as they consider strengthening their defensive options ahead of 2027.
A source close to the Nigerian international has revealed that United’s interest in the 26-year-old dates back further than recent reports have suggested, with the Premier League giants reportedly considering a move for him next year.
Bassey has attracted attention following his improved performances at Fulham, where he has developed into a reliable centre-back since arriving from Ajax in 2023.
Although the defender initially experienced difficulties adapting to English football and occasionally made costly errors, he has made significant progress and established himself as an important figure for the London club. He has also earned 47 international appearances for Nigeria.
United’s interest comes as the club prepares for a possible defensive overhaul in 2027. The Red Devils are expected to recruit at least one centre-back, particularly amid reports that Lisandro Martinez could leave Old Trafford.
However, securing Bassey’s signature may not be straightforward because Fulham still have control over his contractual situation. His current agreement is due to expire at the end of the season, although the club reportedly possess an option to extend it by another year and are keen to offer him a new deal.
Speaking to Footy-Africa, a confidant of Bassey, who is reportedly connected to the Nigerian national team and federation, disclosed that Manchester United’s interest began after the defender’s impressive performances last season.
“The interest in Bassey has been there since last season, when in my opinion he became one of the best defenders in the Premier League,” the source explained.
The insider also praised the Nigerian’s physical attributes, commanding presence and leadership qualities, pointing to his ability to captain Fulham during the current campaign.
The source added: “It is no surprise Manchester United want to sign him, and they are not the only team.”
Despite the growing speculation, Bassey has reportedly not confirmed or dismissed the possibility of leaving Fulham. The source believes the situation could become clearer once the current season comes to an end, particularly because of the defender’s age and contract circumstances.
A move during the January transfer window is considered unlikely, given Fulham’s option to extend his contract. Even if the London club allowed his agreement to expire, Manchester United would have to wait until May to negotiate a pre-contract arrangement with him, unlike clubs outside England.
Fulham could therefore activate their extension clause to protect the defender’s transfer value. Should Bassey decline to commit to a new long-term agreement, the club may consider selling him after the season rather than risk losing him for nothing when his contract expires in 2028.
Manchester United have increasingly prioritised players with established Premier League experience in their recent recruitment plans. Bassey’s development at Fulham, combined with his physical qualities and contractual situation, could make him an attractive option as the club looks to strengthen its defence.
