The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has congratulated Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi after he equalled Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah’s record of 328 appearances in the English Premier League.
Iwobi achieved the milestone while representing Fulham in their 1-0 victory over Coventry City on Saturday, further cementing his place among Africa’s most experienced players in the history of England’s top-flight football.
The 30-year-old Nigerian international is now joint-second alongside Salah on the list of African players with the most Premier League appearances, leaving him just 25 matches behind the all-time record held by former Ivory Coast international Kolo Touré.
Touré made 353 Premier League appearances during his career with Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, establishing himself as one of Africa’s most enduring performers in English football.
The NFF’s Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, MON, praised Iwobi for reaching the landmark and expressed confidence that the midfielder could eventually surpass Touré’s record.
According to Ikpeme, the Nigerian football governing body is delighted with Iwobi’s achievement and hopes to see him become the African player with the most appearances in Premier League history.
“The NFF celebrates Alex Iwobi for this new achievement, and we wish him even greater glory. We will be very happy to see him become the African with the most appearances in the Premier League in the near future,” Ikpeme said.
The federation’s commendation highlights Iwobi’s consistency, longevity and continued contribution to Nigerian football at the highest level.
Iwobi marked the occasion with a solid performance as Fulham secured a narrow 1-0 win over Coventry City.
The Super Eagles midfielder recorded 60 touches, completed 51 passes and registered an impressive passing accuracy of 86.3 per cent during his 73 minutes on the pitch.
His performance demonstrated his importance to Fulham’s midfield, where his technical ability, work rate and experience continue to make him a valuable asset.
The victory also provided another memorable moment in Iwobi’s Premier League career as he moved level with Salah in the competition’s appearance rankings.
With 328 Premier League appearances to his name, Iwobi is now within reach of Touré’s longstanding record of 353 matches.
The Nigerian needs just 26 more appearances to surpass the former Ivory Coast defender and become the African player with the most appearances in Premier League history.
Given his continued involvement at Fulham, Iwobi has an opportunity to achieve the historic feat if he maintains his fitness and regular place in the team.
Salah, meanwhile, remains alongside Iwobi on 328 appearances, making the race for the top position an important milestone in the history of African footballers in England.
Iwobi has established himself as an important member of the Super Eagles since making his international debut. His experience at club level has also contributed to his status as one of Nigeria’s most recognisable footballers in European football.
The midfielder has represented Nigeria at several major international competitions and won one silver and two bronze medals at the Africa Cup of Nations.
He also earned his 100th international cap for Nigeria during a friendly against Portugal, according to the supplied report, marking another significant achievement in his international career.
As he continues to feature for Fulham, Iwobi will be aiming to reach the top of the Premier League’s African appearance rankings and add another historic accomplishment to his career.
For Nigerian football supporters, his pursuit of Touré’s record represents another opportunity for a Super Eagles star to make history in one of the world’s most competitive football leagues.
