Manchester United manager Michael Carrick and Matheus Cunha reportedly have no issues between them despite their heated exchange following the Red Devils’ dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma at Old Trafford.
The Brazilian forward was the hero of United’s remarkable comeback on Tuesday, scoring twice in three minutes before receiving a red card in the closing stages.
However, attention quickly shifted from Cunha’s match-winning contribution to an incident involving Carrick after the final whistle.
According to SPORTbible, footage showed the United boss preventing Cunha from returning to the pitch to celebrate with his teammates, prompting an animated reaction from the former Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker.
The incident raised questions about a possible disagreement between the pair, particularly after Cunha’s dismissal threatened to overshadow his impressive performance.
However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reportedly clarified that there was no lingering disagreement between Carrick and the Brazilian, either during or after the exchange.
Cunha had helped United recover from a disastrous first half in which Roma established a two-goal advantage.
Bruno Fernandes began the fightback from the penalty spot before Cunha struck in the 83rd and 86th minutes to complete a remarkable turnaround.
The Brazilian was subsequently booked for removing his shirt while celebrating his second goal and received another yellow card for a late challenge.
His dismissal meant he was not permitted to return to the field of play after the final whistle, with Carrick’s intervention understood to have been connected to UEFA regulations concerning dismissed players.
Despite the incident, Carrick was full of praise for Cunha during his post-match press conference.
“Matheus, yeah… Matheus can do those things. He’s got them moments,” Carrick stated.
“We swapped him with Bryan [Mbeumo] at half-time to try and get him into the middle of the pitch, give us a bit of a different shape. We put him in the centre of the pitch and he found himself in good positions.”
Carrick also expressed disappointment over the red card but acknowledged the forward’s commitment and desire to make a difference.
“Disappointed with how it finished [the red card]. But again, it just shows how much he cares and what he’s willing to do. And when he’s in that frame of mind, he’s in that mood and he plays like that, that’s why we want him here.”
The victory ended Manchester United’s nine-match winless run and provided a timely boost for Carrick, whose side had struggled for consistency in recent weeks.
However, Cunha’s dismissal means the Brazilian will miss United’s next Champions League encounter against Sporting CP on November 25.
For Carrick, the immediate priority will be building on the comeback victory as they welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford in a Premier League clash on Sunday.
