“I have to frame that!” Magdeburg player pulls off rare feat against Michael Olise
“I have to frame that!” Magdeburg player pulls off rare feat against Michael Olise

For Alexander Nollenberger, 1. FC Magdeburg’s cup match against Bayern Munich was already special because of his past with the record champions. A moment with Michael Olise was the icing on the cake.

FCM left-back Nollenberger frequently came up against right winger Olise during the match. He could not prevent another outstanding performance from the exceptional player (two goals, one assist), but the 29-year-old did get the better of the player who finished ninth in this year's World Footballer rankings on one occasion.

Nollenberger nutmegged the Bayern Munich superstar, then fielded a question about it in a post-match ARD interview. "I almost need to frame that," he admitted, but added: "It was a bit lucky, but I'll take it. In the end, though, it doesn't do me any good."

After Olise's early blow (10th minute), the second-division side responded with a stunning goal from Mateusz Zukowski (15th) and resisted the dominant hosts until the break. Ismael Saibari put Bayern ahead (21st), though, and Baris Atik hit only the post (45+2), leaving Magdeburg narrowly behind at half-time.

Magdeburg had no answer to Bayern's relentless pressure at the Allianz Arena in the following 45 minutes. Bayern Munich eventually won 6-1, a deserved result that left Nollenberger full of respect.

Bayern Munich dismantle Magdeburg after the break: "They don't stop!"

"What a machine," said Nollenberger, a former Bayern reserve-team player (from 2018 to 2020), as he marvelled at Bayern's pressure and hunger for goals after the break. "We kept it close at 2-1 until half-time; we were still within striking distance. Then comes the penalty to make it 3-1, and they just don't stop. They don't stop. And in the end, you can't defend everything away."

Despite the defeat, he said it had been "fun" to stand up to Bayern for as long as possible: "The scoreline isn't close, but that can happen against them." For him personally, as a Bavarian by birth, the match had felt "like being in a film": "It was incredibly beautiful and surreal. Everything around the game was great fun."

Magdeburg's travelling supporters provided an atmospheric cup setting. At least 10,000 fans are said to have travelled to Munich's Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening. According to Bild, there may even have been 13,000.

The Allianz Arena last saw such a large travelling contingent for a domestic match at a TSV 1860 Munich home game in spring 2017, when VfB Stuttgart travelled to Munich with 15,000 fans.
