Archie Gray scored an excellent header for Tottenham Hotspur against Crystal Palace, but the youngster still needs to work on his goal celebrations.

Spurs needed goals from two of their defenders to overcome Crystal Palace 2-0 on Saturday after the Eagles were reduced to 10 men in the 13th minute of the game.

Jean-Phillippe Mateta’s red card has been deemed the correct decision by a former PMGOL official and pundits, with the 29-year-old catching Micky van de Ven with a dangerous tackle near the halfway line.

While Jan Paul van Hecke produced a lovely knee slide after scoring his first Tottenham goal in the second period, the man who scored Spurs’ opener, Archie Gray, was a little less decisive in his celebration.

Archie Gray reveals he asked Tottenham teammate James Maddison to help him with the celebration

Gray peeled off at the back post to produce a fine header into the far corner on 25 minutes.

It was the Leeds academy graduate’s third goal for Tottenham and his first of the campaign. With Gray not being used to finding the back of the net, it is clear that he has not given too much thought to his celebration.

The youngster just put a finger in the air and ran towards the touchline, where some of his Spurs teammates, including James Maddison, were warming up, and the 20-year-old was mobbed by the others.

Gray has shared that he asked Maddison for a suggestion on his goal celebration, and the England international refused to give him one.

When asked about his celebration and if something was planned, the youngster told Tottenham’s official website: “No, I just peeled off like Alan Shearer! I’m a bit old-fashioned. I don’t really think of celebrations or anything like that – nothing comes into my head! I actually asked Madders, ‘what do I do for my celebration?’ and he was like, ‘I don’t even know’. I didn’t do anything. I just put my finger up and ran off!”

Gray admits breaking down Palace was harder after red card

Spurs were expected to win comfortably from the moment Mateta saw red, and in the end, they would have won by a bigger scoreline if not for Dean Henderson’s heroics in goal.

Gray confessed that being reduced to 10 men made Pierre Sage’s side even more difficult to break down as they defended deeper.

When asked if it was a nice feeling to be able to contribute to a dominant home win, the versatile midfielder responded: “It was a really good feeling, especially with them having a man sent off. It’s even more difficult to break them down because they want to defend more. It’s just really important to get three wins on the bounce. It hasn’t happened for quite a long time.”
