Neil Warnock has accused Manchester United of getting their transfer strategy all wrong and warned they will continue to "struggle" until they address a glaring weakness he believes is being overlooked: their inability to defend.

The outspoken former Premier League manager has taken aim at United's recent recruitment, questioning why a club of their stature continues to spend heavily on attacking and midfield talent while failing to assemble a reliable defence.

"They spend money on forwards, they spend money on midfield players like you've never seen and yet they still haven't got a defence," Warnock said while speaking at a shoot for an upcoming Famous Grouse Christmas campaign. "I don't understand how a top club like that can't buy defenders - and they've never had any full backs that can defend either."

Warnock believes United need to be considerably more astute in the transfer market, citing Arsenal's recent capture of Ezri Konsa as an example of the kind of recruitment they should pursue .

"They could have bought Konsa this year. Why didn't they spend money like that? They'd rather spent £100million on a midfielder - even though the defenders can't defend!"

He added: "If nothing changes, they are going to struggle. I'm not bothered who comes in. They will struggle."

United have invested heavily across the pitch in recent transfer windows, spending more than £150m on midfield reinforcements over the summer, including Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. The previous summer, their focus was on strengthening the attack, with Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo arriving for a combined fee of more than £180m.

Defensive reinforcements were prioritised the summer before that, when Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, Patrick Dorgu, Noussair Mazraoui and Ayden Heaven arrived for a combined £128m. But despite that investment, United have continued to look vulnerable at the back, with clean sheets proving increasingly difficult to come by.

Manchester United's recruitment has also come under fire from supporters in recent weeks, with owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and director of football Jason Wilcox facing criticism over their transfer decisions. Reports earlier this week claimed Chelsea value Andrey Santos at half the £50m United paid for him in the summer, bringing further scrutiny to Wilcox's recruitment strategy.

For Warnock, the problem extends beyond the players United are signing. He believes their recruitment process has become too reliant on statistics and data, at the expense of the basic eye test.

He recalled an incident during his time at Middlesbrough, when the club's recruitment team presented him with a potential defensive signing.

"I remember at Middlesbrough, we wanted a left back, and the recruitment team called me in. There were three young lads and a chief exec. And they said, 'We've found you a left back.' They showed me data, and showed me footage of a match he played in. And in the first five minutes, the ball comes over, and he ends up fouling this kid. And then the second one comes over and he ball-watched.

"After about 10 minutes, I said, 'Just hold it there, lads.' I said, 'This guy's not good enough.' They said, 'Well, why?' I said, 'Because he can't defend!' And they said, 'Oh yeah, but he wins more headers, he wins more tackles. Look at his stats.' I said, 'I'm not looking at his stats! I'm telling you, he can't defend!'

"And that's the same for Man United. You look at Brighton and Bournemouth and clubs like that, and you think that's a good [recruitment strategy]... But when you look at Man United, if the recruitment can't see that what I've seen for the last five years, there's something wrong somewhere."

United's defensive frailties were again exposed in their most recent Premier League outing, a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring in the second half with a superb solo effort, but the England international was allowed to carry the ball for around 30 yards with little resistance, with Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez both affording him too much space as he made his way towards goal.

The problems at Old Trafford are not confined to the defence, either. United have also struggled to find a reliable centre forward, with Mbeumo and Cunha being deployed in makeshift roles through the middle amid Sesko's difficulties in front of goal - and with his fitness.

There has also been growing unrest away from the pitch, with manager Michael Carrick facing mounting pressure following a run of disappointing results and a public spat with captain Bruno Fernandes.

Following United's 4-1 defeat to Como last month, Fernandes, who was substituted midway through the second half, openly criticised Carrick's tactics. The manager responded by leaving his captain out of the starting XI for the subsequent game against Bournemouth, which also ended in a three-goal defeat.

But while Carrick opted to make an example of Fernandes, Warnock believes he should have taken a different approach, arguing that keeping his best player onside was more important than making a point.

"If it was me, I would have played Fernandes," he said. "Even after he slaughtered me. I'd put my arm around him, because I want to win! I've got to get a win and he's the best player. So I'd have put my arm around him and said, 'Listen, you made a mistake doing that. You had a go at me and all that, but I want you to prove me wrong today.'"

Fernandes was an unused substitute against Bournemouth but subsequently returned to the starting line-up against Chelsea. He also scored the opening goal in Tuesday's dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Roma.

United's next assignment is a meeting with Aston Villa, and the result could have major implications for Carrick's future. Senior figures at Old Trafford are understood to be planning to assess the manager's position during the upcoming international break, leaving him with little margin for error.
