According to a report by Football London on Sunday October 18, 2026, Chelsea goalkeeper Emi Martinez is reportedly facing around 40 days on the sidelines after suffering a serious jaw injury during the club’s Premier League victory over Everton.
Chelsea secured consecutive league wins, with Pedro Neto scoring twice and the team recording its first Premier League clean sheet in nine months. Martinez and Mike Penders helped keep Everton from scoring before the Argentine goalkeeper suffered his injury late in the match.
The incident occurred when Martinez collided heavily with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while defending a free-kick. The goalkeeper remained down for approximately ten minutes before being stretchered off the pitch.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso subsequently confirmed that Martinez had been taken to hospital while conscious. Reports later indicated that the World Cup winner required surgery to repair a fractured jaw.
According to Argentine journalist CL Merlo, the operation took place on Saturday evening, with Martinez expected to miss at least 40 days. If this recovery timeline proves accurate, he could remain unavailable until early December.
The injury represents a significant setback for Chelsea, particularly after Martinez contributed to their improved defensive performances. His absence will likely provide Mike Penders with additional opportunities to feature in goal.
Martinez is expected to miss several important fixtures during his recovery. Chelsea’s upcoming schedule includes a cup encounter against Liverpool, followed by Premier League matches against Manchester United and Sunderland.
The goalkeeper could also miss Argentina’s two international fixtures during the November break, when they are scheduled to face Uruguay and Costa Rica at home.
Following the international interval, Chelsea are due to play Leeds United before travelling to Nottingham Forest. These matches could also fall within Martinez’s anticipated recovery period.
If his rehabilitation progresses according to the reported schedule, Martinez could return for Chelsea’s home Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace, currently scheduled for December 2.
However, his actual comeback will depend on his recovery following surgery and the medical team’s assessment of his fitness. Chelsea will hope their goalkeeper returns safely without complications.
