According to a report by Football London on Saturday October 17, 2026, Jose Mourinho has admitted that Arsenal transfer target Vinicius Junior should have left Real Madrid during the summer transfer window, insisting that he would have forced a move to another country if he were in the Brazilian forward's position.
Vinicius was reportedly a major target for Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta keen to strengthen his attacking options by bringing the Real Madrid superstar to north London. However, the Brazilian ultimately decided to remain at the Spanish giants and sign a new contract.
Mourinho believes the forward could have found a more respectful environment elsewhere, although he acknowledged that Vinicius' loyalty to Real Madrid and affection for the club played a significant role in his decision to stay.
"If I were in his shoes, I probably wouldn't be here. I would have forced a move to a country where he'd be respected, but out of loyalty to Real Madrid and love for the club, he stayed," Mourinho said.
The Portuguese manager also praised Vinicius for maintaining a positive attitude despite the criticism and difficult moments he has experienced in recent weeks.
"He believes things can improve, and he still has that smile. Nothing and no one can take it away from him. He's a fantastic guy, and it's easy to get along with him. I spend a few minutes alone with him every day. I value him immensely because he always manages to live and survive with a smile," Mourinho added.
Vinicius began the season in impressive fashion, registering four goal contributions in his first six matches as Real Madrid won five of their opening six league fixtures.
However, his form and disciplinary record have attracted attention following the international break. The Brazilian was sent off against Villarreal after pulling an opponent's hair, an incident that resulted in a straight red card.
He was subsequently substituted before the hour mark during Real Madrid's Champions League encounter against Roma. The players introduced from the bench helped inspire a comeback, making the decision to withdraw the Brazilian a major talking point.
Despite those incidents, Mourinho has continued to show his support for Vinicius, praising his personality and resilience while suggesting that a move abroad could have offered him a fresh start.
For Arsenal, the comments highlight a transfer opportunity that failed to materialise during the summer. Arteta was reportedly keen to bring Vinicius to the Emirates Stadium as part of his efforts to strengthen a side looking to compete for major honours.
The Brazilian's pace, dribbling ability and capacity to influence decisive moments would have made him a significant addition to Arsenal's attack. His experience at the highest level of European football could also have provided the Gunners with another proven match-winner.
However, Arsenal were unable to convince Vinicius to leave Madrid. The report also states that the north London club failed to secure a deal for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, despite their reported interest in strengthening their attacking department.
Nevertheless, Arsenal have made a strong start to the campaign, with their 3-0 defeat to Brighton representing the only blemish on their record, according to the report.
Arteta has also had to manage several injury concerns during the opening months of the season, although players such as Martin Zubimendi and Piero Hincapie are progressing towards a return.
