Man City Survive Brighton Fightback to Extend Winning Run in Women’s Super League

According to a report by BBC Sports on Sunday, October 18, 2026, Manchester City continued their impressive winning run in the Women’s Super League after surviving a spirited Brighton comeback to secure a victory at the Joie Stadium.

The defending champions appeared to be heading for a comfortable afternoon after racing into a 3-0 lead within the opening 17 minutes. However, defensive lapses and a significant drop in intensity allowed Brighton to fight their way back into the contest and threaten an unlikely comeback.

Khadija Shaw was at the heart of City’s explosive start, scoring twice after combining effectively with winger Lauren Hemp. England full-back Niamh Charles added a third goal, leaving Brighton with a mountain to climb after a disastrous opening spell. City continued to dominate the early stages, creating several opportunities to extend their advantage before the half-hour mark.

Shaw, Hemp and Grace Clinton all came close to scoring again as the hosts threatened to turn the match into a one-sided contest. However, City’s intensity suddenly dropped, allowing Brighton to settle into the game and gain greater possession. The champions began making mistakes and struggled to maintain the control that had characterised their opening performance.

Brighton took advantage of the situation when Olivia Garcia finished a cut-back from Fran Kirby to reduce the deficit. The goal provided the visitors with renewed confidence, and they continued to press City as the first half progressed. Their efforts produced another breakthrough when Caitlin Hayes scored with a header, cutting City’s advantage to just one goal and transforming the atmosphere at the Joie Stadium.

The sudden change in momentum left City manager Andree Jeglertz with plenty to consider as his players headed into the interval, having surrendered much of their commanding lead. What had initially appeared to be a straightforward victory had become a much more difficult challenge, with Brighton demonstrating that City could be troubled when their concentration dropped.

The second half, however, proved less eventful than the closing stages of the first period. Both teams struggled to create clear-cut opportunities, although City had chances to restore their two-goal cushion. Shaw produced the best of those opportunities with a low effort, but the hosts were unable to add to their tally.

Despite Brighton’s improved performance, the visitors could not generate enough attacking pressure to complete the comeback. City ultimately did enough to protect their narrow advantage and claim the points, although their second-half performance highlighted areas that will require attention. For Brighton, there were encouraging signs in their response after falling three goals behind.

Garcia showed aggression in attack, Kirby demonstrated her creative quality, while Kiko Seike also posed a threat during the contest. Nevertheless, Brighton struggled to match City for significant periods and were unable to sustain their attacking momentum after the break.

The result provides City with the points they needed to maintain their position at the top of the Women’s Super League standings and continue their winning run. However, the manner in which they allowed Brighton back into the match will serve as a warning that even a substantial early advantage cannot guarantee victory without consistent concentration.
