According to a report by FootballTransfers on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Manchester United are reluctant to appoint Antonio Conte as their next manager because they believe the Italian would not fit the club’s preferred structure.
Conte, who left Napoli at the end of last season, is reportedly interested in taking charge at Old Trafford if United decide to dismiss Michael Carrick following their disappointing start to the 2026/27 campaign.
Carrick is under growing pressure after United suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat against Como in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The result means the Red Devils have won just two of their first 11 matches in all competitions this season.
The situation has been further complicated by captain Bruno Fernandes’ public criticism of Carrick’s methods, with the manager responding firmly to the midfielder’s comments.
Senior figures at Old Trafford continue to support Carrick, but this weekend’s Premier League meeting with Bournemouth could prove crucial to his future.
Despite Conte’s interest, United’s hierarchy reportedly have reservations about his suitability for the role.
The former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager is known for his demanding approach and strong personality, which could conflict with the organisational structure the club intends to maintain.
Julian Nagelsmann is another potential candidate being linked with the position. The German is also available after leaving his role as national team manager following another disappointing major tournament campaign.
The report adds that Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler and former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe could also be considered if United begin their search for a permanent replacement.
Unai Emery, who has strengthened his reputation during his successful spell at Aston Villa, is another name attracting interest.
Meanwhile, betting odds place Howe among the leading contenders for the position at 9/4, with Conte and Hurzeler both listed at 5/1. Nagelsmann follows at 7/1.
Carrick, however, remains focused on turning United’s fortunes around and will hope a victory against Bournemouth can ease the pressure surrounding his position.
Reflecting on the defeat against Como, Carrick said: "I’m bitterly disappointed. I’m frustrated, more than frustrated. I’m really angry, to be honest."
He added: "But you’ve got to move on, you’ve got to deal with what’s next and see what that looks like."
