Man Utd boss's brilliant five minute speech sent a brutal message to his players

United manager Michael Carrick issued a passionate plea to his underperforming stars.

Michael Carrick's raw and emotive five minute press conference speech was a masterclass in passion and honesty.

He stunned assembled reporters at Carrington by not just sitting down to take questions as normal, instead launching into a lengthy and composed analysis of a dire situation and what is needed to get out of it.

It was brave and stirring stuff. It was a good decision to front up your inquisitors with your innermost thoughts and also send a clear message to those troublesome players.

Carrick is clearly hurting, and in a way, this is good to see as a United fan. We are hurting too and we want a fightback. It looks like the manager is up to it, now the players really need to follow suit.

This is a man who realises what supporters are going through watching this seemingly perpetual cycle of underperformance played out over several seasons.

He is right to say that United went on a great run earlier this year with some brilliant wins over City and Arsenal that stirred thoughts of a return to better times.

But the promise has not been sustained this season. That is down to insufficient recruitment (not Carrick's fault) and a group of players that have got steadily more passive/useless. Maybe that is because they are playing two times a week but that really is no excuse.

In his emotive statement at the start of his press conference, he mentioned connecting with fans with play that showed "vigour, intensity, passion and enjoyment."

I loved the way he referenced Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Sir Alex Ferguson as shining examples of people who had used their outstanding talent for the greater good.

The message was very much - no one is bigger than the club itself. It was a clear signal to a group of players who have been badly letting him down recently. 'You are failing me, the supporters and the club itself,' was what he was saying.

It was a brutal message to them to stop sulking and work their socks off for the club in the games to come. No more strolling around in games, no more half-hearted pressing and bloomin' well make sure you track back and win that ball.

While we are on the finer details, it would also be great if we could actually pass to each other and deliver crosses to a team-mate in the box.

Carrick also referenced Sir Matt Busby and Sir Bobby Charlton as prime examples of "being humble and having humility". He could not have picked better examples to hammer home his message.

You would not have caught Sir Bobby gesticulating wildly to team mates like Bruno Fernandes or whingeing continually to the referee. If Bobby lost the ball his first thought would be trying to win the darn thing back.

So well done Michael. Decent, sensible, non social media frenzy United supporters hear you and really want you to succeed. There really is no point in going through yet another managerial change and no wants Antonio Conte.

So here's my advice for what it is worth - pick the players on Sunday against Bournemouth who you really know are going to give their absolute heart and soul for the club.

It doesn't matter if that is an untried youngster. Fans would far rather see total commitment from a lesser name than some of the strolling nonsense we have seen from the so-called bigger stars.

I will even take a loss against AC Milan conquerors Bournemouth as long as I can see a cohesive and passionate display from those players in red at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Let's herald the Busby babes fighting spirit, attack and defend like our lives depend on it and finally get this season on the road.

It's time to start backing your club and your manager boys.
