According to a report by Metro on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Merson believes the outcome of Arsenal's upcoming matches could reveal whether Mikel Arteta's men have what it takes to defend their league title.
Arsenal moved level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table following a 2-0 victory over Everton last weekend. However, their momentum suffered a setback in midweek when they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Fleetwood Town following a penalty shootout.
The North London club will now focus on Sunday's crucial encounter against Liverpool at Anfield. The Gunners also have difficult assignments against Newcastle United, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in the coming weeks.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson highlighted the importance of Arsenal's demanding schedule, suggesting that their performances during this period could have a major influence on the championship race.
"What a November Arsenal have, by the way. They've got a hard month, including the start of December," Merson said.
He added: "You'll know by December 13 if Arsenal will win the Premier League. Because there's a saying: after the hard games, come the easy games."
The former England international also raised concerns about the possibility of Bukayo Saka missing some of these important fixtures.
According to Merson, Saka's importance to Arsenal extends beyond his goals and assists, as the winger possesses the ability to make decisive contributions at crucial moments during matches.
Although Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze could provide alternative options, Merson questioned whether either player could consistently deliver at the required level over a prolonged period.
He pointed out that maintaining high performances as a regular starter for six to eight weeks presents a different challenge from making occasional appearances in the starting eleven.
Meanwhile, Merson believes Liverpool must secure victory against Arsenal if they hope to remain serious contenders for the Premier League title.
The Reds have responded positively to their 3-0 defeat against Manchester City, winning their last five matches across all competitions. Their recent victories include encounters against LASK, Brentford, Villarreal and Brighton, alongside a Carabao Cup penalty shootout success against Chelsea.
Despite their improved form, Merson insists that another defeat against Arsenal would significantly complicate Liverpool's championship ambitions.
"Liverpool are starting to cook a little bit, but they have got to win this Sunday if they want to be in the Premier League title race," he said.
He further suggested that Liverpool would need Arsenal to lose points on several occasions while maintaining consistency themselves, making their pursuit of the league leaders particularly difficult.
Sunday's showdown at Anfield is therefore an important fixture for both teams. Arsenal will be aiming to consolidate their position at the summit, while Liverpool will be determined to reduce the gap and strengthen their title credentials.
For Merson, the outcome of Arsenal's challenging fixtures before December 13 could ultimately offer a clearer picture of their chances of successfully defending the Premier League crown.
