Manchester United have decided to retain Michael Carrick as head coach despite growing speculation over his future following the club’s disappointing run of results.
According to a report by FootballTransfers on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, the Red Devils’ hierarchy have opted against dismissing Carrick, giving the 45-year-old another opportunity to turn the team’s fortunes around.
United are enduring a difficult period, having gone eight matches without a victory across all competitions. They are also languishing in 16th position in the Premier League after recording just one win in their opening seven league fixtures this season.
The club’s struggles intensified following Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, raising questions about Carrick’s position and prompting discussions among senior officials over his future.
Antonio Conte, Julian Nagelsmann, Eddie Howe and Unai Emery had reportedly emerged as potential replacements should United decide to make a managerial change.
However, The Overlap reporter Mike Keegan indicated that Carrick would remain in charge for now, posting on X: “Understand Michael Carrick will be given the opportunity to turn things around at Manchester United.”
The Athletic and BBC Sport have also reportedly confirmed that the former United midfielder’s position is safe for the time being.
United executives Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox are understood to have discussed the manager’s future on Monday before deciding to give him more time to improve the team’s performances.
Carrick will now face an important test when United travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea on Saturday.
The fixture could provide an opportunity to end their winless run, although another disappointing performance would increase the pressure on the manager.
The Red Devils will subsequently host AS Roma in the Champions League next Tuesday before facing Aston Villa in their final match ahead of the November international break.
Speaking after the Bournemouth defeat, Carrick acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his position but insisted he would continue carrying out his responsibilities.
“I totally understand the situation. I’m not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. I’m carrying on as normal.
“I love this place. I’ll always do what I feel is going to be the best for the football club, whatever decision is made on anything really, so that’s kind of it.
“You know, I’m not expecting anything either way. I take the responsibility - I’ve said that, I accept the responsibility,” he added.
