According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday November 6, 2026, Ajax defender Youri Baas has reacted positively to reports linking him with a possible move to Barcelona, describing the Catalan giants as the biggest club in the world.
The 23-year-old has emerged as a potential defensive target for Barcelona as sporting director Deco continues to assess options to strengthen Hansi Flick's squad ahead of the January transfer window.
Barcelona are reportedly monitoring Baas's situation at Ajax, with his versatility and technical qualities making him an interesting candidate for the Spanish champions.
Speaking to VoetbalPrimeur, as relayed by SPORT, the Dutch defender admitted that he had seen reports of Barcelona's interest but was unsure where the speculation had originated.
"I've no idea where they're coming from, but I have seen something. It's nice, of course," Baas said.
He was then asked about Barcelona's reported interest and made his admiration for the club clear.
"I think it's the biggest club in the world. It's a huge compliment," he added.
His comments will undoubtedly attract attention from Barcelona supporters, particularly as the club continues to explore possible defensive reinforcements.
Baas is believed to fit the profile of player Deco is considering because of his ability to operate in multiple defensive positions.
The Dutchman is naturally left-footed and can play as both a centre-back and a left-back. He is also comfortable in possession and possesses the technical ability to help his team build attacks from the defensive areas.
Those qualities could make him a useful addition to Flick's squad, especially considering Barcelona's preference for defenders who can contribute to their possession-based style of football.
The German manager has experienced defensive selection problems in recent months because of injuries, increasing the need for players capable of providing reliable cover across different positions.
Baas's versatility could therefore offer Barcelona additional options, allowing Flick to use him in different defensive roles depending on the team's requirements.
However, Barcelona are not believed to have made a formal move for the Ajax defender at this stage. The club are still assessing different profiles before deciding which players to pursue during the January transfer window.
Baas has established himself as an important member of Ajax's squad and has delivered encouraging performances this season.
He has already made 16 appearances, scoring two goals and providing one assist, demonstrating that he can contribute at both ends of the pitch.
His latest outing also highlighted his positional flexibility.
During Ajax's impressive 6-1 victory over FC Midtjylland, manager Michel Sanchez deployed the defender in defensive midfield before taking him off in the 70th minute.
Although centre-back and left-back remain his primary positions, his ability to perform in midfield further demonstrates the range of options he could provide to a potential new club.
Nevertheless, Barcelona could face competition if they decide to turn their interest into a concrete transfer pursuit.
English and German clubs are also reportedly monitoring the 23-year-old, potentially creating a competitive race for his signature.
Ajax are also in a strong negotiating position because Baas has a contract that runs until 2028. The Dutch club are therefore under no immediate pressure to sell him and could demand a significant fee before considering an offer.
