Chelsea transfer prospect Honest Ahanor has come under heavy criticism from Crystal Palace supporters following a disappointing performance in their Europa League draw against Hoffenheim.
According to a report by The Athletic on Friday, 6 November 2026, the 18-year-old defender struggled during Palace's 1-1 draw with Hoffenheim at Selhurst Park on Thursday night, raising questions among supporters about his performances and reported £40 million transfer fee.
Chelsea agreed a deal with Atalanta during the summer to sign Ahanor for £40 million, with the Italian defender scheduled to move to Stamford Bridge next summer after spending the current season on loan at Crystal Palace.
The arrangement was expected to benefit all three clubs, with Atalanta securing a significant transfer fee, Palace strengthening their defence following Maxence Lacroix's departure and Chelsea allowing the youngster to gain Premier League experience before his arrival.
However, Ahanor's latest performance has attracted negative reactions from Palace supporters.
The teenager struggled in the opening stages against Hoffenheim after attempting to intercept a pass but failing to make contact with the ball. His mistake allowed the German side to launch a counter-attack and score in the seventh minute.
He was also fortunate not to concede another goal after losing possession inside his own penalty area while attempting a drag-back. His defensive partner, Jaydee Canvot, had to make a sliding intervention to prevent a close-range effort.
Palace manager Pierre Sage eventually substituted Ahanor in the 75th minute, with the Eagles later rescuing a point through a stoppage-time equaliser.
Despite the late recovery, supporters were particularly critical of the Chelsea-bound defender.
One Palace fan wrote: "This might be one of the worst individual performances I’ve seen at Palace from Ahanor."
Another supporter was even more critical, saying: "This guy is one of the worst centre backs I’ve ever seen."
A third questioned Chelsea's investment, writing: "Chelsea have been robbed blind for £40m."
Other supporters also expressed concerns about his passing ability and consistency, while some compared his situation with Axel Disasi, who joined Palace from Chelsea permanently during the summer.
Ahanor's difficult evening will undoubtedly increase scrutiny of his development, although the teenager still has time to improve before completing his move to Stamford Bridge next summer.
Chelsea will be hoping he can demonstrate the potential that convinced them to invest £40 million in his services.
