According to a report by Manchesterevening News on Friday October 23, 2026, Manchester United could face the prospect of losing young defender Diego Leon on loan in January, with his agent warning that a temporary departure may be necessary if the teenager cannot secure a pathway into the senior team.
The Paraguayan left-back joined United from Cerro Porteno in July 2025 after turning 18, arriving with considerable potential following his impressive development in South American football.
Leon had already made 33 senior appearances for Cerro Porteno before moving to England, convincing United to invest in his long-term future. However, he is still waiting to make his competitive first-team debut at Old Trafford.
During his first season, the defender featured 20 times for Manchester United’s Under-21 side, gaining valuable experience while continuing to work towards an opportunity with the senior squad.
According to comments reported by ABC Deportes on X, Leon’s agent, Renato Bittar, has made it clear that his client’s future will depend on the club’s plans for his development over the coming months.
“If there isn’t a plan to break into the first team between December and January, we’ll look for a way out for him,” Bittar explained.
He added that a loan move would allow the youngster to gain regular playing time before returning to Manchester with greater experience.
“A loan somewhere where he can compete, get playing time, and return to Manchester,” the agent said.
Bittar also identified the English Championship and other European leagues as possible destinations, while insisting that his client would prefer to remain at Manchester United in the long term.
“The Championship is an option, as are other European leagues, but we don’t want to leave here,” he stated.
The agent maintained that Leon has been performing well for the Under-21 team, training effectively and maintaining excellent physical condition despite his limited senior opportunities.
United’s ongoing difficulties at left-back could potentially create an opening for the teenager. Luke Shaw has experienced recurring injury problems, while Patrick Dorgu has also been sidelined this season.
Although Dorgu can operate defensively, he has frequently been deployed further forward, leaving United with fewer specialist options when injuries affect their defensive department.
Nevertheless, Leon’s immediate promotion is not guaranteed. United must determine whether he is ready for first-team responsibilities or whether regular senior football elsewhere would better support his development.
A January loan therefore remains a possibility if the club cannot offer a convincing route into Michael Carrick’s senior plans, with the defender’s long-term future still centred on Manchester United.
