Troy Deeney says he feels sorry for Man United star who has nobody to learn from at Old Trafford

According to a report by Metro on Saturday October 24, 2026, Troy Deeney has expressed sympathy for Manchester United defender Leny Yoro, claiming the young Frenchman lacks experienced centre-backs who can help him develop at Old Trafford.

Yoro joined Manchester United from Lille in 2024 for a reported £52 million fee after establishing himself as one of Europe's most promising young defenders. However, his progress has been affected by injuries, limited playing time and managerial changes.

The 20-year-old has worked under Erik ten Hag, Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick since arriving at the club, making it difficult for him to establish himself consistently in the first team.

Speaking to SunSport, Deeney questioned the quality of the defensive environment surrounding Yoro and argued that the youngster does not have enough experienced players in his position to learn from.

“Leny Yoro, decent, but he has no chance,” Deeney said.

The former Watford striker also pointed to Yoro's involvement with the France national team under Zinedine Zidane as evidence of his potential, suggesting that the defender possesses the ability to succeed at the highest level.

Yoro's first season at Manchester United was disrupted by a foot injury sustained during pre-season, restricting his opportunities to make an immediate impact.

Although he subsequently received more playing time under Amorim, regular appearances have remained difficult to secure. His development has also been affected by changes in the team's defensive system and competition for places.

Despite his struggles at club level, Yoro received recognition from France after being called up to the senior squad following an injury to Ibrahima Konate. He subsequently impressed in a 4-1 victory over Belgium, earning praise from Zidane for his performance.

The situation highlights the challenge facing Manchester United as they attempt to develop one of their most promising young defenders while competing for results.

Experienced centre-backs can play an important role in helping young defenders improve their positioning, decision-making and communication. Deeney believes Yoro is missing that kind of guidance at Old Trafford.
