According to BBC Sport on Thursday, October 22, 2026, it has been reported that Chelsea have made inquiries about the possibility of signing Barcelona defender Jules Koundé during the upcoming January transfer window.
The French defender has been identified by the Blues as one of the potential recruits as they seek to reinforce their defense during the winter period.
The January transfer window is expected to be a busy period for the Premier League, as clubs are looking to add quality and competition to their squads ahead of the second half of the season.
And, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Koundé, 27, has emerged as one of the most wanted defenders in Europe, with his versatility as a defender capable of playing at right-back and in the heart of the defense making him an attractive target for any Premier League club.
The former Seville defender has established himself as one of the top defenders in La Liga over the last two seasons, and his qualities have been recognized across Europe, with several clubs already showing interest in him. However, a move to Stamford Bridge would require Barcelona to accept a hefty transfer fee.
The Catalan club is reportedly asking for more than €50 million for the Frenchman, which will undoubtedly test the patience of the new owners of the Blues .
This price would undoubtedly discourage many clubs from making an offer, but given the intensity with which Chelsea have pursued targets in recent seasons, the Blues could find themselves in a race for the defender’s signature.
And not only because Barcelona’s asking price is in line with what the club is asking for in its potential sales, such as Romao and Gavi, but also because Koundé could provide immediate competition and cover in defense, two aspects that have been of vital importance to the club this season.
It remains to be seen whether the Frenchman’s qualities convince Chelsea to make an offer.
Barcelona and Chelsea will undoubtedly be aware that, if the transfer window opens and the French defender is freed up, there will be other interested parties.
This could be a problem for Barcelona, which has struggled to sell its defenders in recent seasons.
Attracting a high transfer fee for Koundé during the January transfer window would be a dream come true for the Blaugrana, but the club will have to analyze its sporting and economic situation to make the best possible decision. For its part, Chelsea must evaluate whether Koundé would be the ideal defender for their project next season: a defender with cover qualities and who can also act as a right-back.
But, more importantly, the new executive committee must analyze whether the reported transfer price asked by Barcelona is worth it.
After all, making an inquiry does not imply that an offer has been made, let alone accepted. The January transfer window can be a great opportunity for Graham Potter’s men to reinforce their defense, but above all it must be a step forward for the club’s project.
