According to a report by Barca Blaugranes on Friday October 16, 2026, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has admitted that Alejandro Balde is going through a difficult period at the club, with the left-back struggling to secure regular playing time this season.
Balde was linked with a possible departure during the summer, with Manchester United reportedly showing interest in the defender. However, he ultimately stayed at Barcelona to fight for his place in Flick’s squad.
Unfortunately for the Spaniard, the impressive form of João Cancelo and the emergence of young defender Xavi Espart have made competition for the left-back position increasingly difficult.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Flick acknowledged Balde’s situation but praised his attitude and commitment in training.
“It’s not easy for him right now, but he’s training, which is the most important thing he needs to do, and he’s training very well,” Flick said.
The Barcelona manager also highlighted the quality of Cancelo and Espart, explaining that both players are currently performing at a high level. However, he insisted that Balde continues to behave professionally despite his limited opportunities.
Flick added that the defender must remain ready to contribute whenever the team needs him, suggesting that his chances could improve if circumstances change.
Balde’s lack of minutes has reportedly raised questions about his future, with a possible January departure being considered. Nevertheless, no official decision has been announced, and the defender still has an opportunity to fight his way back into the team.
