Enzo Fernández Reveals Desire to Leave Manchester City

According to a report by FootballTransfers on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Enzo Fernández has reiterated his ambition to return to River Plate in the future, acknowledging that the Argentine club still holds a special place in his heart despite his current commitment to Manchester City.

The midfielder completed a high-profile move from Chelsea to Manchester City this summer for a reported €145 million, a fee described in the article as a Premier League transfer record.

Before making the switch to European football, Fernández spent 15 years with River Plate, where he accumulated 53 first-team appearances. He subsequently moved to Benfica in 2022 to continue his career in Europe.

During an appearance on the Argentine programme Los Edul, the 25-year-old spoke openly about his desire to represent River Plate again at some stage in his career.

“I want to return to River at some point. I've said it several times, and I'm sure I will,” Fernández stated, according to Sport Witness. “It's something I really want. I stand by what I've said and what's on record.”

He further explained that his ambition goes beyond simply returning to a familiar environment. The Argentina international would love to compete for silverware with River Plate and enjoy the club's incredible atmosphere again, particularly because his previous spell there did not last as long as he would have liked.

Nevertheless, Fernández emphasised that he has no immediate plans to walk away from Manchester City. Having signed a contract that keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031, the midfielder recognises that a return to Argentina is still some distance away. He has scored once in 10 appearances since joining the club on September 1.

With his current situation in mind, an exit next year is considered highly improbable unless unexpected developments change his circumstances at City.

Instead, the report suggests that a reunion with River Plate is more likely to happen towards the end of his career, when he eventually decides to end his spell in European football.

Elsewhere, Manchester City could face important decisions regarding the futures of several squad members. Rayan Aït-Nouri has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Manchester United after experiencing difficulties securing consistent minutes.

Rico Lewis is another player whose future could come under consideration if he continues to struggle for regular opportunities. Meanwhile, Mateo Kovačić could be allowed to depart if City decide against offering him a new contract before his existing deal expires.

For the moment, Fernández is fully focused on his responsibilities at Manchester City. However, his latest admission leaves little doubt that returning to River Plate remains a dream he is determined to realise before bringing his playing career to an end.
