Steven Gerrard Names Three Teams That Can Challenge Arsenal For Premier League Title

According to a report by Metro on Monday, November 2, 2026, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has backed Arsenal to retain the Premier League title while identifying Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea as the three teams capable of challenging Mikel Arteta's side this season.

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League table after securing an important 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the first half, allowing the Gunners to move three points clear at the summit.

The result followed Manchester City's unexpected 1-0 home defeat against Brighton, giving Arsenal an opportunity to strengthen their position in the title race.

Gerrard believes Arsenal demonstrated the qualities required to become champions through their disciplined performance against Liverpool. He praised their determination, defensive organisation and ability to secure victories in difficult circumstances.

Speaking on The Overlap Daily, the former England international maintained his prediction that Arsenal would win the Premier League, explaining that their ability to produce different types of performances could prove decisive over the course of the campaign.

Gerrard also highlighted the importance of the Anfield victory, suggesting that Arsenal could look back on the result as one of the defining moments of their title-winning season.

However, he acknowledged that Liverpool still had significant work to do to return to the title race, with the Reds sitting nine points behind Arsenal.

The former midfielder also discussed Brighton's impressive performances under Fabian Hurzeler, describing them as one of the most dangerous teams in the league.

He believes Brighton have the quality to challenge for a Champions League qualification place because of their attacking threat, improved defensive organisation and confidence on the pitch.

Nevertheless, Gerrard does not consider them genuine title contenders, predicting that Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea will eventually establish themselves ahead of the other challengers.

He pointed to the quality of those four squads and their ability to handle the different challenges presented by a 38-game Premier League campaign.

Chelsea were also included in his assessment, with Gerrard impressed by their performance during the second half of their recent match.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will be encouraged by their latest victory as they continue their attempt to defend the title they won last season, ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League trophy.
