Valentin Barco has backed Chelsea transfer target Nico Paz to eventually take over Argentina’s famous number 10 shirt following Lionel Messi’s international retirement.
According to a report by The Athletic on Thursday, 5 November 2026, the Chelsea midfielder praised Paz’s ability and expressed his hope that the Como star would become the next player to wear the iconic jersey.
Paz has attracted considerable attention following his impressive performances under former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas at Como.
The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the Italian club’s most influential players, attracting interest from several European sides, including Chelsea.
The Blues have reportedly sent scouts to monitor the Argentine, watching him during Como’s Champions League defeat to Feyenoord and their Serie A victory over Fiorentina, in which he scored and provided an assist.
His performances have continued to attract attention, with another goal and assist against Torino before registering three goal contributions in Como’s 9-1 victory over Lens.
Chelsea are understood to be considering a move for Paz, although a January transfer is considered unlikely.
Real Madrid reportedly have a £70 million buyback clause in his agreement, while Chelsea could be prepared to offer around £100 million to secure his services.
Barco, who shared a room with Paz during the 2026 World Cup, was asked whether he saw any young Argentine capable of making a significant impact for the national team.
He replied: “Nico, maybe. Nico is very, very good. He’s very well-rounded in every way. Personally, I really like his playing style.”
Asked whether Paz could wear Argentina’s number 10 shirt, Barco added: “I really hope so. I would love to see it. I shared a room with him at the World Cup; we spent more than 50 days together, and in a few training camps. We know each other’s journeys. I hope he can wear it.”
Barco is not the only Argentine international to identify Paz as a potential successor to Messi. Goalkeeper Emi Martinez has also expressed support for the Como midfielder taking on the responsibility.
Paz’s creativity has further strengthened his reputation. He is reportedly averaging 2.68 chances created per 90 minutes this season, ahead of Chelsea’s Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.
Chelsea’s interest could give them an opportunity to strengthen their attacking options, although convincing Como to sell will not be straightforward.
