Barcelona Star Unlikely to Win Kopa Trophy as Teammate Emerges as Favourite – report

According to a report by Barca Universal on Monday, October 26, 2026, Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi is reportedly unlikely to win the Kopa Trophy, with his teammate Lamine Yamal emerging as a potential favourite ahead of Monday night's Ballon d'Or ceremony.

Journalist Santi Ovalle suggested that Cubarsi's expected absence from Barcelona's travelling delegation could be an indication that the prestigious award is set to go to the teenage winger instead.

Speaking on El Larguero, Ovalle explained that the young defender's absence could provide an important clue about the likely winner. He suggested that if Cubarsi does not receive the award, Yamal could benefit. However, Barcelona have not yet officially confirmed the full list of representatives who will attend the ceremony.

Cubarsi has enjoyed a remarkable development under manager Hansi Flick, establishing himself as a key figure in Barcelona's defence. The teenager has impressed with his maturity, intelligent positioning and composure on the ball. His performances on the international stage have further enhanced his reputation, having won the young player of the tournament award at the previous World Cup.

Meanwhile, Yamal has become one of Barcelona's most influential attacking players. His creativity, exceptional individual ability and decisive contributions have established him as one of the most exciting young talents in world football. The winger is also regarded as one of the leading contenders for the Ballon d'Or.

Ovalle also pointed out an interesting historical trend involving the two individual honours. According to the journalist, no player has ever won both the Kopa Trophy and the Ballon d'Or in the same year. However, winning the youth award does not automatically rule a player out of contention for the senior prize.

Although Yamal could add another prestigious individual honour to his achievements, the Kopa Trophy might not be his main target. Meanwhile, Cubarsi's possible absence from the ceremony could disappoint supporters who believe his consistent performances last season deserve recognition.

The young defender has remained a reliable presence in Barcelona's backline despite the team's frequent defensive adjustments. With uncertainty surrounding the club's travelling delegation, attention will now focus on whether Cubarsi attends the ceremony and which Barcelona players ultimately take home the awards.
