According to a report from FootballTransfers, on Wednesday October 21, 2026, Chelsea are reportedly growing frustrated with Alejandro Garnacho’s lack of playing time at Aston Villa, raising doubts over the winger’s future and the terms of his loan.
Chelsea signed Garnacho from Manchester United for €46.2 million in 2025, but his first season at Stamford Bridge failed to meet expectations. After Xabi Alonso took charge, the Argentine was left out of the club’s plans and joined Villa on loan.
Villa manager Unai Emery had admired Garnacho for some time. However, the winger has made only four appearances, totalling 42 minutes, since moving to Birmingham.
The clubs agreed to a loan with a conditional obligation to buy, reportedly because UEFA rules complicated a straightforward permanent transfer.
Football Insider reports that Chelsea believe Villa may be trying to avoid triggering the purchase clause. The Blues had expected a permanent deal worth around €50 million and could now face the task of finding Garnacho another club if he returns.
Garnacho’s struggles have also prompted comment from his former Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag.
In an interview with The Athletic, Ten Hag described him as an “amazing player” who needs trust and support, while noting that he must remain focused defensively and improve his decision-making.
