According to a report by Daily Post on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, British broadcaster Piers Morgan has cast doubt on Michael Carrick’s suitability to manage Manchester United, suggesting that former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte could be an alternative if the club decides to make a change.
Carrick has come under increasing pressure following United’s disappointing start to the Premier League season. The report stated that the Red Devils had managed just one victory in their opening seven league matches, leaving them 13th in the standings.
Morgan believes Manchester United may need a manager with a strong personality and the determination to improve the team’s performances. He pointed to Conte as a potential candidate, citing the Italian’s intensity and demanding approach to management.
Speaking on Sports Uncensored, Morgan questioned whether Carrick was the right person to lead the club through its current difficulties, despite acknowledging his achievements during his playing career.
“Michael Carrick. I am not feeling it. He was a superb player,” Morgan said.
The broadcaster’s comments highlighted his concerns about the difference between succeeding as a footballer and managing a club as demanding as Manchester United. He suggested that the club might benefit from a more forceful managerial presence as it attempts to recover from its poor results.
Morgan also expressed admiration for Conte’s temperament, believing the former Chelsea manager possesses qualities that could help United address their problems.
“Conte has a problem. He got that fire in the belly which I think United need now,” he added.
Conte has built a reputation for his demanding leadership, tactical organisation and insistence on high standards. During his time at Chelsea, he guided the club to the Premier League title in the 2016/17 season and won the FA Cup in 2018.
His experience competing for major trophies could make him an interesting name to consider if Manchester United eventually decides to change managers. However, his tactical philosophy, expectations and management style would need to be assessed against the club’s existing squad and long-term plans.
For now, Morgan’s remarks represent his personal opinion rather than an indication of an imminent managerial change. There has been no confirmation that Manchester United intend to dismiss Carrick or that the club has approached Conte about taking charge.
United’s immediate priority remains improving their performances and results, while the pressure on Carrick is likely to depend on how the team responds in its upcoming fixtures.
