According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday October 21, 2026, Barcelona defender Joao Cancelo endured a difficult evening against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, raising concerns about his defensive weaknesses ahead of Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid.

The Portuguese full-back struggled against Desire Doue and PSG’s intense pressing, bringing back painful memories of Barcelona’s Champions League elimination against the French club in 2024.

Cancelo featured at both left-back and right-back during Barcelona’s 4-2 defeat but failed to deliver a convincing performance in either position. His problems began early when he received a yellow card for a needless foul on Doue. The booking forced him to approach subsequent challenges cautiously.

PSG repeatedly exploited Barcelona’s left flank, with Doue causing significant problems for the experienced defender. Cancelo’s difficulties continued after he switched to the opposite side of the defence. He also struggled to prevent Fabian Ruiz from scoring PSG’s fourth goal.

The performance drew comparisons with Barcelona’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against PSG in 2024. Xavi Hernandez’s side entered that encounter with a 3-2 advantage from the first leg. However, Ronald Araujo’s dismissal dramatically changed the contest.

Ousmane Dembele subsequently exploited Cancelo’s defensive positioning to score for PSG. The Portuguese defender also conceded a penalty as Barcelona’s hopes of progressing collapsed.

Another worrying similarity concerns the fixture that followed that European disappointment. Barcelona faced Real Madrid immediately after their elimination in 2024, and Cancelo endured another difficult outing. Lucas Vazquez tormented him by winning a penalty and scoring before providing the cross for Jude Bellingham’s winning goal.

Cancelo has generally impressed this season, particularly with his attacking contributions. However, his latest display against PSG exposed defensive vulnerabilities that Barcelona cannot afford to ignore.

With El Clasico approaching immediately after the disappointing European result, Cancelo faces another important test. His performance against Real Madrid will determine whether he can overcome the difficulties that troubled him during the corresponding period in 2024.
