Worst Decisions Made By Michael Carrick In The First Half That Cost Manchester United Against Como

According to a report by Flashscore on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Manchester United endured a difficult first half in their UEFA Champions League clash against Como, trailing 1-0 after Nico Paz scored in the second minute. Michael Carrick’s team selection and tactical approach came under scrutiny as the visitors struggled to control the game and create clear scoring chances.

One of the major concerns was Carrick’s midfield selection, which appeared to lack the balance needed to provide defensive stability and attacking creativity. Manchester United found it difficult to deal with Como’s movement through the middle, allowing the hosts to dominate possession and dictate the pace of the match for long periods.

A more defensively balanced midfield could have helped United protect their backline and limit Como’s ability to exploit spaces. The early goal exposed the visitors’ defensive weaknesses and forced them to chase the game from the opening minutes.

Another decision that attracted attention was Carrick’s choice to leave Amad Diallo on the bench. The Ivorian winger offers pace, dribbling skills and creativity that could have caused problems for Como’s defenders. With United struggling to break through the opposition’s defensive structure, Amad’s ability to take on defenders might have provided an additional attacking threat.

Starting Amad could have improved United’s attacking options on the right wing and forced Como to defend more cautiously. However, the visitors struggled to build consistent attacking moves throughout the first half.

Carrick’s decision to deploy Bruno Fernandes on the flank instead of using the Portuguese midfielder in his preferred central attacking role also raised questions. Fernandes is known for his vision, passing ability and creativity, which make him an important figure in United’s attack.

Playing him in a wider position appeared to reduce his influence in central areas, where he could have linked the midfield with the forward line and created more scoring opportunities. Allowing Fernandes to operate behind the striker might have improved United’s attacking transitions and helped the team create more dangerous chances.

Manchester United’s defensive organisation was another area that required improvement. Como took advantage of their early opportunity through Paz, while the visitors struggled to respond effectively. Although the manager was not solely responsible for the goal, United’s performance highlighted the need for greater defensive discipline and composure.

Overall, Carrick’s decision to leave Amad Diallo on the bench and position Bruno Fernandes on the flank became major talking points as Manchester United struggled to produce the attacking creativity needed to challenge Como during the opening 45 minutes.
