Mourinho Rejects January Departure for Real Madrid Defender Despite Limited Playing Time

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Friday October 30, 2026, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly ruled out Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving the Spanish giants during the January transfer window despite his struggles to secure regular playing opportunities this season.

According to Defensa Central, the Portuguese tactician wants to retain the England international and believes he still has something valuable to contribute to the squad during the remainder of the campaign.

Alexander-Arnold's limited involvement has generated considerable speculation in England, with reports suggesting a possible return to the Premier League could become an option if his situation fails to improve.

However, Real Madrid are reportedly unwilling to consider an immediate departure, as Mourinho prefers maintaining squad stability while preparing his players for an important period of the season.

The manager also wants Alexander-Arnold to remain mentally focused and avoid becoming distracted by rumours surrounding his future. The coaching staff reportedly have no intention of encouraging his departure.

Although regular starting opportunities are not guaranteed, Mourinho believes the defender deserves opportunities to demonstrate his abilities and remain involved in the team's plans.

Alexander-Arnold's statistics highlight his difficult campaign so far. The former Liverpool star has managed just 345 minutes across all competitions, including 266 minutes in La Liga and another 79 in the Champions League.

Such limited involvement represents a significant disappointment for the Englishman, who would have expected considerably more playing time following his arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Competition from Denzel Dumfries has further complicated his situation, with the defender struggling to establish himself as Real Madrid's preferred right-back.

Nevertheless, Mourinho recognises the qualities Alexander-Arnold offers, particularly his exceptional passing ability, creativity from defensive positions and contribution to attacking transitions.

His technical qualities provide different options compared with Federico Valverde, making him a useful alternative within Mourinho's tactical arrangements.

Meanwhile, speculation about a potential Premier League return continues gathering attention. However, Mourinho's reported position suggests Real Madrid have no immediate intention of allowing the defender to leave in January.

Alexander-Arnold must now concentrate on improving his performances and taking advantage of available opportunities as he attempts to secure a more important role under Mourinho.
