According to a report by Madrid Universal on Thursday November 5, 2026, Real Madrid defender Denzel Dumfries has highlighted the growing demands of modern football, stressing that players need more rest and recovery time amid an increasingly congested fixture schedule.
The Dutch international shared his thoughts while attending the XV Sports Global Medicine Summit at the Santiago Bernabeu. The event was organised by the Sports Doctor Network and featured several guests, including Real Madrid's head of medical department, Dr Niko Mihic.
Dumfries emphasised that professional footballers are required to play too many matches throughout the season. He noted that the demanding schedule makes adequate recovery increasingly important for players.
"We need to rest, we play a lot of matches," Dumfries said, as quoted by AS.
The 30-year-old also identified sleep as an essential part of maintaining physical fitness and recovering from demanding matches. He explained that proper sleep allows athletes to recover faster and protect their bodies from the effects of constant physical exertion.
"Sleep is crucial; we need to recover as quickly as possible, and sleep is one of the most powerful tools we [footballers] have to achieve that and to take care of our bodies," he added.
Having spent 12 years competing at the highest level, Dumfries has experienced football in the Netherlands, Italy and Spain. The defender has also witnessed how the football calendar has become increasingly demanding over the years.
Meanwhile, Dumfries joined Real Madrid from Inter Milan during the summer transfer window after the Spanish club activated his €20 million release clause. He arrived as a replacement for Dani Carvajal, whose contract expired at the end of last season.
Since arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Netherlands international has made 11 appearances across all competitions, recording one assist. However, he is yet to fully convince manager Jose Mourinho, who has occasionally deployed Federico Valverde at right-back this season.
