According to a report by Barca Universal on Friday November 6, 2026, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has explained why Barcelona midfielder Gavi was omitted from his squad for the November international fixtures.
The coach pointed to the youngster's limited playing time under Hansi Flick and increased competition for places rather than questioning his quality or importance to the national team.
The 22-year-old will consequently miss Spain's upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against the Czech Republic and England.
De la Fuente announced his squad on November 6, with five Barcelona players receiving invitations. Joan Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Pedri, Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal were all included in the selection.
Speaking about Gavi's absence, the Spain manager acknowledged his importance but insisted that every player must earn their place through performances.
He explained that several talented footballers had missed out despite deserving consideration. He also emphasised his appreciation for Gavi while encouraging him to continue improving.
According to SPORT, De la Fuente believes the midfielder must remain focused, work harder and develop further to regain his position in the national team.
Gavi's lack of regular football at Barcelona has contributed significantly to his situation. He has managed just 211 minutes across seven appearances this season, starting only twice.
His limited involvement has prevented him from building the consistency needed to compete with other established midfielders.
Competition at Barcelona has also become stronger, with Hansi Flick having several options available. Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Marc Bernal and Fermin Lopez are among the players competing for midfield positions.
Although Gavi's versatility allows him to operate in different midfield roles and even play out wide, that quality alone cannot guarantee his international selection.
However, De la Fuente's comments suggest that the Barcelona midfielder has not been permanently excluded from Spain's plans. Instead, he must improve his performances and secure more playing time at club level to earn another opportunity with the national team.
